"my first grader has problems with reading but does great with math. I have requested that he would be tested and the school says they have got a 3 teir program they have to go through first before he gets tested, then it will take 45 days from then. Is this true?"

"my 4 year old seems to have a problem communicating with others in school, plays by herself, and does not talk much at all! Can you give me some advice on why this is happening. She talks non stop at home, sometimes she talks to the point you think she is speaking in another language. Is this something i should be worried about?"

"How common is it to have a child with special needs transfer from one school to another to find the best fit? My son was diagnosed with learning differences in kindergarten. His special resource class was 1 on 1 support with a teacher in a 4x8 foot 'room' for almost half of the school day. This was not acceptable to me. I moved him to a school with a fantastic reputation for their special resource facilities. They said after one year that they were unable to help him as they saw fit and recommended he move to a special day class at another school. After my new husband and I visited the school, we decided this was not the place for our son as there were two autistic children, children with behavioral problems and handicapped children. I thought that this was not the best environment for my son as he is in everyway a 'normal' child other than his dyslexia and his audotory proccessing deficits.I could not with out the help of his biological father afford private schooling. After quite a bit of research I found a great school he has attended for three years now. He has made very slow progress. They are wonderful teachers and have a great relationship with my son. However, they have recently told me they feel they have exhausted their resources and are at a loss as how to help him with his reading. My husband and I need to relocate due to his job.His new position is 5 and 1/2 hours from where we live now. We are looking at special day classes in the public school system with tutoring help from a school that services dyslexic children with out behavioral problems. Unfortunately my son is now in 5th grade and really doesn't want to move. We are now fighting my sons biological father in court. He is stating we move too much to provide stability for my son. Whom I have had sole physical custody of since the age of 2.I have had to move twice to find the school he is in now and now have to move again. My husband has great job security now and we will most likely not move again.I would like an oppinon as well as any facts that support my situation that children with such learning differences can be hard to place in scholastic enviornments and have to be moved when neccessary to meet their needs.I want the best for my son and I believe I can't be the only person that has had to deal with moving their child from school to school to find the best help for them."

"I am in charge of the special education services at our private school in NC. We try to keep our standards/procedures in regards to serving and providing accommodations as close to the public school system as possible. My question is: Does a student who only has a diagnosis as a 'slow learner' qualify for special services and/OR modifications in the classroom? I've always been under the impmression that only a diagnosis of LD, dyslexia, ADHD could warrant a modified curriculum and/or additional resources/services. "

"My 13 yr old starts 7th grade this year.I am having him Home schooled. Our public school can't provide him with the way he learns. He has mixed dyslexeia & ADHD.I've had him tested and the DR. stated how he is to be taught. The public school will not let him play sports unless he attends public school but the school can not provide him with the enviroment or the special needs for him to learn. What am I to do?What are my rights with Home schooling & playing sports in the public school system? Please someone help me this is unfair to children."

"My daughter is going into the 4th grade, and was diagnosed with dyslexia and Irlene going into 3rd grade. The school district we live inis very small and doesn't have a lot of resources to help. They do have a dyslexic teacher that helps 10-15 students a day 30 mins at a time, but that's only during the school year, they won't help during the summer while summer school is going on. She did pass the TAKS test, by 2 pionts in reading, do you know of any places around the dallas,Texas area where we can get help for her all year long. We have a reading tutor for her now, but she only goes 3 days a week. I am very worried she won;t get the help she needs, and with 3 children younger than her, we're afraid they migth have trouble too, since it is heiredatery, and both y husband and my mother are dyslexic too."

"I have a child with special needs. He is in an inclusion class. I have offered to help in the classroom. I always volunter for feild trips.I have asked if you see that my son maybe struggling let me know. If you think that a better techinque will work let me know. ect.. However the teacher has made it clear at the start that she felt my son be held back in Kindegrader.(K-) I'm not reciving my IEP progress reports. I have asked for them for three weeks. NO luck with Principle and the school distric brushed me off. I also asked why the classroom did not have computers or a PA system. However when the distric check in on that two days later than when they told me they were going too. The school had slaped in 4 computer in the room. Distric burshed me off aging. However the computers do not work! The distirc does know that! Still I have not recived the IEP progess reports. Help whats my next move! How long do they have to give me a date to revise the IEP if I ask for another meeting. Should I try to work this out with the school? Or do I go higher up the chain? Do I just pull him and home school him? Please help!!!!! a concerned parent!!! dhinkle@sc.rr.com"
